Chinese Style Microwave Egg

Like the egg but don't like the fried or boiled? Why not try our Chinese style microwave egg dishes.

Egg is a healthy and good resource of protein. Frying and boiling are the common ways to cook eggs. But having too much fried food is not good for your health, and the boiled ones sometimes are just too boring :)

Here are two quick and easy ways that we normally used in our home, just use the microwave oven to cook eggs, then seasoned by common Chinese ingredients such as soy sauce, black beans and spring onions. Simple, healthy and tasty.

In this post, I have two types of microwave cooked egg, one is egg curd, another is similar to the poached egg.

Chinese Style Microwave Egg Curd

In China we like to have steamed egg curd, some restaurants also have this steamed egg in the menu.

In our home, instead of using steamer, we can use microwave to make egg curd becuase it is easy and quick to make. The ingredients are similar to we used for steamed egg curd. 

This can be served as a side dish. Because it is tender and tasty, it is a perfect small meal for toddler to have in the late afternoon. It can be good for older people or patients who have difficulty in chewing too. You may remove the chopped spring onions if prefer.

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • chinese black beans (optional)
  • sesame oil
  • light soy sauce
  • spring onions, finely chopped


  • Beat the eggs; Add black beans and water. Mix well. 
  • Put the beaten eggs inside the microwave oven; medium power for 2 minutes. Depending on your microwave, you may need to adjust the time shorter or longer if you prefer egg to be softer or harder.
  • Once it is cooked, add sesame oil, light soy sauce and chopped spring onions on the top.

Chinese Microwave Poached Egg

The second dish is the microwave poached egg. Lots people have done this. But for Chinese style, instead of adding salt and peppers, we add the sesame oil and light soy sauce.

  • Place an egg in a bowl and remember to pierce the yolk.
  • Place the bowl in microwave oven and cove it by a plastic lid or film.
  • Set microwave power medium for 1.5 to 2 minutes (depending on your microwave oven you may need adjust the time setting accordingly.)
  • Once it is cooked, add sesame oil and light soy sauce for seasoning.

  • Do not forget to pierce the yolk and cove it by lid or film. It will make your life easy when you clean the microwave after the egg “explosion”.
  • For the egg curd, I have also tried to add some shrimps, which gives a new flavour and tastes good too. So you may experiment more by adding the ingredients you like. :)
